Flower Zine - "It wasn't about the tree"
A floral zine inspired by Katie Hawkins-Gaar’s essay “It’s not about the tree.”
If you’re not already following Katie’s Substack, My Sweet Dumb Brain, then I heartily recommend it! After reading Katie’s essay “It’s not about the tree: On collapse, caretaking, and carving out space for something better” I was inspired to create a zine about this beautiful yet problematic chinaberry tree and the reflections it prompted. I selected a few of Katie’s lines and layered them over a painting I created of chinaberry blossoms. I hope you’ll enjoy playing with this zine and Katie’s words as much as I did.
This download features a floral zine with selected text from Katie’s essay as well as a blank version of the design so you can compose your own message. Perhaps you’ll tuck it under a tree for a neighbor to discover.
The single-page design can be folded down into a mini-book, or zine. Folding instructions are included.

Please note: printables will likely show some variation when printed!
Printers are all a little different, and they’re all a little moody (I recommend singing to them while they print to stay on their good side). Printed colors, tone, clarity, etc. may vary from screen to printer, and from printer to printer. Unfortunately my superpowers do not extend to every screen and printer in the world, but I hope you’ll still enjoy the spirit behind each piece even if inconsistencies occur.
